Week 1 - Introduction and Pro Forma of the Course GIG1005 (Social Engagement)

We began our first class at 9:30a.m. The meeting was conducted via Microsoft Teams platform and we will be using it throughout the whole course of Social Engagement - GIG1005. Social Engagement is a University Course under the Centre for the Initiation of Talent and Industrial Training (CITra) of University of Malaya, Malaysia (UM).

During the first session, Dr. Azah Anir Norman introduced herself and discussed the pro forma of the course. Dr. Azah is a lecturer at UM from the faculty of Computer Science & Information Technology under Department of Information System. She is such a nice and amiable lecturer.

Then, Dr. Azah explained that this course would expose the students on social engagement and their roles as volunteers. Students need to plan their social engagement programme as a class and will be placed at a specific location based on their programmes. Students have to write a report and make a presentation on their experience with the society. At the end of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the awareness of the importance of social engagement, develop the ability to work in a team and with the society and most importantly to show good communication skills.

Besides, Dr. Azah also showed us some videos regarding the previous activities done by our seniors so that we had a better understanding on how the programme was carried out and to further stimulate our creativity. From the videos, we could observe that most of the activities were aiming at primary school students and our seniors were having a great time with them. However, one of the obstacles we might be facing this year is that all the planned programmes should be carried out online instead of face-to-face interactions due to COVID-19 outbreak.

Therefore, it is indeed a very challenging task for us to come out with a group of ideas and it really tests our capabilities to think out of the boxes. It requires our critical thinking skills with the constraint of the pandemic. Before the session ends, Dr. Azah told us that we should share our opinions during the class in the following week. Lastly, the class was ended in a happy atmosphere where everyone needed to open up their webcams for photo session.

Week 4 - Finalisation of the Module

Date: 1 April 2021 Day: Thursday Although non-face-to-face class was held, Dr. Azah had assigned to us some goals to be achieved beforehand. She also advised the director to finalise the module especially the pre and post questions. It is important to confirm all the activities so the secretary can develop the proposal as soon as possible to be approved by the Head of Department. These were some of the objectives to be attained during our discussion prior to the meeting: 1) Seminar theme 2) Online platform  3) Poster design 4) Letter template (invite speaker) 5) Quiz questions preparation (10 winners) 6) Chairperson nomination 7) Seminar itinerary 8) Planning and execution of activities All these information are important so that Siti Norhidayah Binti Abdul Bari Arbee and Tan Wan Han as the secretary and assistant secretary respectively can help to prepare the proposal for the entire project.
