Week 12 - Closing Ceremony (Closing Chapter)

Date: 29 May 2021
Day: Saturday
Time: 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.
Hooray! We were heading to our final chapter and this week will be the last meeting for our program "Bits With Teens". It was indeed a memorable journey for all the mentors, mentees and the executive members as well as all the other parties who have supported our event! William Shakespeare once said "Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say good night till it be morrow". We as the mentors were feeling glad to be able to share our knowledge with the teens throughout the whole event. We were feeling sad at the same time because that marked the end of our program and we were unable to meet our amiable mentees again! Frankly, we hope they could learn something and a best of luck to all of them!
On 28 May 2021 (Friday) 9:30 a.m., we were having a dry run for the Closing Ceremony and all the executive members and leaders of each group were required to attend. In that meeting, we planned the flow nicely so that the event will run smoothly the next day. For the closing ceremony, we will be having Facebook and Instagram Live sessions as usual so that whoever feel interested could also join our event and witness the joyfulness and successfulness of our program! Other than that, an absentee form was also created for the mentors to fill in if they were unable to attend any one of the events or modules. The reason of absence also needed to be clarified for documentation purposes.
On 29 May 2021 (Saturday), we welcomed all the mentees to the meeting room followed by the recitation of "Doa". Then, we invited Ir. Dr. Mas Sahidayana Binti Mokhtar, Senior Lecturer in University of Malaya, to give a brief talk and conclude our event "Bits With Teens". Without further ado, the mentees were required to join their respective breakout rooms to have the last session with their mentors. On that day, 2 of our mentees who are Noor Muhammad Thaqiff Bin Noor Ariff and Nur Aisyah Binti Asrullizam were present. We really appreciate their supports as both of them have attended most of our modules throughout the event!
First of all, we did a brief conclusion about the 4 modules which we had completed in the past few weeks to recall back what they have learnt so far. We also motivated them to do self-learning because there are a vast collection of information on Computer Science that could be found on the Internet. What we emphasised the most was that learning is an endless process as the saying goes "never stop learning, because life never stops teaching" and the study environment would not be a setback for you to chase your dream and to achieve your target. You are the one who determines what you will mould into! Carl Gustav Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist, once said "I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become".
We even introduced some of the popular websites that are related to Computer Science to them. They could probably learn a lot of new things from those pages and they should also focus on their interests and work hard in order to achieve them regardless of their family backgrounds. Besides, we also asked them some of the questions we have prepared beforehand such as "Which part of the modules do you find challenging and which part do you find interesting?", "Are you interested in taking Computer Science related subject in the future after going through our event?" and "Do you think the contents that have been learned could be applied in your daily lives?". Overall, we received positive feedback from both of them. Thaqiff told us that he enjoyed our event and felt satisfied with the syllabuses of the modules. According to him, he thought that Module 1: Embedding the Flow was the most interesting part of this program and he enjoyed learning pseudocodes and flowcharts. He even thanked us for our guidance and we were feeling really pleasant and contented at that moment! Nur Aisyah was having some technical issues in which her microphone and webcam were not functional almost all the time. However, we managed to get her opinions form the chat-box function in Google Meet. She appreciated a lot of this program as it further enhanced her knowledge in this field. She promised that she will take up this subject as her core course in her future. She even said that she was now learning some basic computing skills in her secondary school. We felt happy for her too and we sincerely wish that she will become a good programmer very soon.
We were eager to receive their responses and reviews towards our program so that we could do something to improve the flow of our program. In the last meeting, we also showed them some other interesting websites that could help them to improve their coding skills. We have introduced them some games that require programming knowledge and we hope they will utilise those platforms and develop some hands-on skills. After that, it was time to say goodbye to our mentees! We took a group photo for the last time and left the breakout room.

In the general meeting room, a Kahoot quiz session was held to summarise and to wrap up all the things from Module 1 until Module 4. We could observe that the participants were so enthusiastic and they had a ball on that day! Some of the mentees even managed to get perfect score in the fun quiz slot! Then, we headed to the most thrilling part of our program which was the prize giving ceremony. Before that, we displayed 6 different TikTok videos that have been created by the contestants and we could see how creative and innovative the students nowadays in editing and producing such fascinating videos. First, we announced the Top 3 winners for the TikTok Challenge which was merely voted by us as the organisers of this program. Later, we declared the winner of TikTok Challenge which fell on Muhammad Abdullah Afiq Bin Asrullizam from Group 2: The Titans. He is Nur Aisyah's brother who is from our group Group 10: WiFi. We wish both of them enjoyed themselves throughout the event! Next, we announced the winners for each module and all the winners would be receiving cash prizes as rewards.
Afterwards, Dr Azah Anir Binti Norman, Senior Lecturer in University of Malaya, who is also the director of this program also gave a short speech to round off the event. She was feeling grateful to all the participants as well as the teachers from each primary and secondary schools who support this event from beginning till the end! She even thanked the organisers of this program which were all the students of Group 17 and Group 19 in GIG1005 - Social Engagement for conducting this program. Lastly, Amrin Hafiz Bin Eddy Rosyadie as our Multimedia committee member and his teammates showed us a video prepared by them. The video was designed in a special way where we could see a lot of pictures and short but unforgettable moments being framed together. It was a touching atmosphere and we will miss each other for sure! Finally, we opened the webcams and took one last photo before ending the session. All of the mentees were looking charming and in good conditions. As usual, feedback form was forwarded to all the mentees for them to evaluate the overall flow of event.
Remarks:
- Fatima Azzahra Putri Binti Azzubair and Muhammad Faris Au-Farraq have never attended any of our meetings before although they had registered for this program in the beginning! Therefore, their names would be cancelled and they are unable to retrieve their E-certificates.
- For the winners of each category, the mentees can message their respective mentors to inquire about the details or methods of receiving the cash prizes or any other related issues.
- Besides that, all the mentors can also apply for redemption of expenditures throughout the program especially the Internet cost. They are required to fill out a Google Forms and provide invoice or receipt for reclamation of money. The maximum redemption amount is only RM50.
